Impact of IOL decentration of different aspheric IOL designs on optical quality

Captura

An experimental model eye was used to study the impact of intraocular lens decentration on optical aberrations (astigmatism and coma) and optical quality (MTF and Strehl) with different state-of-the-art aspheric IOLs. We found that the increase in aberrations/reduction of optical quality upon decentration depends on the specific IOL design, with the Vininex (Hoya XY1) being the most immune design to decentration. The study has been published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

We welcome Andrea Esteban to VioBio Lab, who will join as part of the European Research Council ERC Proof-of-Concept Light-AIOL, which aims at promoting transfer of VioBio Accommodating IOL technology. CSIC owns two granted patents in AIOL and Photobonding technology.

Andrea obtained a BSc in Biomedical Engineering and a MSc in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from University of Barcelona. She has experience in both research environments -at the Laboratory of Nanobioengineering (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia, IBEC) where she had worked on Organ-on-a-chip-, and in technology transfer -at ALBA synchrotron where she gave scientific support to customers and managed a patent portfolio.

Aiswaryah Radhakrishnan wins Justiniano Casas Best Thesis Award – Accesit

Collage RNO Aishu

Former Opal Marie Curie Early Career Researcher Aiswaryah Radhakrishnan has been awarded Justiniano Casas Best Thesis Award – Accesit for her thesis “Presbyopia Corrections: optical, perceptual and adaptational implications”, developed at VioBio Lab (Instituto de Optica, CSIC) under the supervision of Prof. Susana Marcos and Dr. Carlos Dorronsoro.

The Justiniano Casas Award was established by the Sociedad Española de Optica (Sedoptica) in 2007 to recognize excellent PhD work in imaging science, and is awarded tri-annually by the Sedoptica Imaging Technologies Committee. The award is sponsored by Lasing S.A.

Dr. Andrea Curatolo, a Multiply COFUND Postdoctoral Fellow, received the Young Investigator Best Presentation Award in the Symposium of Visual Sciences for his talk on dynamic OCT. The award was presented at the Reunion Nacional de Optica, the Congress of the Optical Society of Spain (Sedoptica), celebrated at Universidad Jaume I in Castellón. The award is co-sponsored by the Optical Society of America, and presented by Prof. Chris Dainty, past OSA President.

Estimated IOL position from 3-D OCT imaging of the full crystalline lens shape, published in Scientific Reports

The study uses parameters from pre-operative 3-D full crystalline lens shape obtained from quantitative OCT imaging for a better prediction of post-operative IOL position. It is shown that this prediction exceeds in accuracy current estimations of IOL position, and when combined with standard IOL selection formulas, results in most accurate refraction correction. The publication appears in current’s issue of Nature journal Scientific Reports.
