Future paradigms in cataract surgery, an invited article in the Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering

Cataract surgery is the most performed surgical treatment worldwide (with >28 million surgeries/year). In this invited article, we foresee the future of IOL guided by 3D imaging and visual simulators of prospective vision. We propose that quantitative 3D OCT imaging of the crystalline lens to map lens opacities, anticipate IOL position, and develop fully customized eye models for ray-tracing-based IOL selection. Conversely, visual simulators (in which IOL designs are programmed in active elements) allow patients to experience post-operative vision befire surgery to make more informed decisions about which IOL to choose. Quantitative imaging and optical and visual simulations of postsurgery outcomes will allow optimal treatments to be selected for a patient undergoing modern cataract surgery.

The article, by invitation from the prestigeous Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering to Prof. Susana Marcos, is a collaborative endevour between VioBio Lab (IO-CSIC), 2EyesVision SL, the Center for Visual Science/Flaum Eye Institute (University of Rochester) and the Laboratory of Optics at the Universidad de Murcia.

Multifocal Contact Lens mapped in Spatial Light Modulator simulators, published in Biomedical Optics Express

Visual simulators are useful tools to provide patients experience of multifocal vision prior to treatment. In this study, we mapped commercially available center-near aspheric multifocal contact lenses (MCLs) of low, medium, and high additions on a spatial light modulator (SLM) in the VioBio Lab Adaptive Optics Visual Simulator. We found statistically significant similar Through Focus Visual Acuity curves in patients fitted with the multifical contact lenses, or through the visual similator. The SLM captures the profile of center-near MCLs and reproduces vision with real MCLs (at least in monochromatic light), revealing that the MCL profile and its interactions with the eye’s optics (and not fitting aspects) account for the majority of the contributions to visual performance with MCLs. This validation also supports intermediate states in the simulation process with other visual simulators, such as the SimVis.

Susana Marcos, named Honored Alumni of University of Salamanca

Viobio Lab Director, Susana Marcos, received the highest honor of the Alumni Society of the University of Salamanca. She received this recognition alongside Ana Pastor, Past Congress Speaker, and Manuel Mirat, CEO of Prisa Group. The University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain (800 years old), and one of the oldest in Europe. The ceremony took place in the imposing Aula Magna of the historic building of the University. The distinction was presented by Prof. Angela Calvo, and the academic ceremony was presided by the Rector of the University.
