Alberto de Castro has received a PhD Thesis Extraordinary Award from the University of Valladolid for his thesis entilted “Reconstruction of the gradient refractive index of the crystalline lens with optimization methods”, defended last July , 2012. The thesis is supported by 5 high impact publications in the area of crystalline lens properties.

Contributions of the lens Gradient Index and shape to the lens spherical aberration and astigmatism, published in Vision Research

1-s2.0-S0042698913000953-gr6

An OCT-based study of lens geometry and gradient refractive index in porcine lenses in vivo reveals that the presence of GRIN shifts spherical aberration towards negative values in comparison with a homogeneous index, and decreases the amount of astigmatism. The results are published in the June issue of Vision Research.
