Role of parafovea in blur perception published in Vision Research

Parafovea

The blur experienced by our visual system is not uniform across the visual field. Additionally, lens designs with variable power profile such as contact lenses used in presbyopia correction and to control myopia progression create variable blur from the fovea to the periphery. We studied the perceived neutral focus with images of different angular subtense (from 4° to 20°) and found that the amount of blur, for which focus is perceived as neutral, increases with stimulus size. We also studied the changes in central perceived neutral focus after adaptation to images with similar magnitude of optical blur across the image or varying blur from center to the periphery. Altering the blur in the periphery had little or no effect on the shift of perceived neutral focus following adaptation to normal/blurred central images. These perceptual outcomes should be considered while designing bifocal optical solutions for myopia or presbyopia.

The study is a result of collaborative work between the Department of Applied Physics, KTH, Royal Institute of Technology and VioBio Lab, Instituto de Optica CSIC, in the context of Marie Curie ITN Opal.

The results are published in Vision Research: A. Venkatamaran, A. Radhakrishan, C. Dorronsoro, L. Lundström & S. Marcos, “Role of Parafovea in blur perception”, Vision Research 138, 59-65 (2017).

SimVis Patent awarded Best Patent of the Year by Fundación Madri+d

Madrid

Congratulations to Carlos Dorronsoro, José Ramón Alonso and Susana Marcos, inventors of Patent “Miniaturized Simultaneous Vision Simulator”, which has been awarded with the Best Patent Award by Fundación Madrid+d. The jury has positively evaluated the large market potential for a device that addresses the aging of the population. The patent, along two others owned by CSIC, and licensed to the spin-off company 2EyesVision, is the core technology of SimVis, a wearable see-through simulator of multifocal corrections for presbyopia.

Alberto de Castro, COFUND Multiply Postdoctoral Fellow joins VIOBIO Lab

Captura1

We welcome Dr. Alberto de Castro who joins the Visual Optics and Biophotonics Lab under the Marie Curie COFUND Action MULTIPLY.

Alberto de Castro developed his PhD thesis at the Institute of Optics under the supervision of Prof. Susana Marcos presenting the first estimates 3-D Gradient Index profiles of human crystalline lenses, based on OCT, for which he received the PhD thesis extraordinary Award from the University of Valladolid. He joins VioBio after several years of postdoctoral training in Indiana University (Steve Burns’ Laboratory) and Universidad de Murcia (Pablo Artal’s Lab) where he has worked on high resolution ocular imaging. His COFUND MULTIPLY project combines sophisticated ocular imaging and intraocular lens design.

COFUND MULTIPLY Program is an International Mobility and Training Program in Photonics for Experienced Researchers coordinated by Aston University. The Institute of Optics (CSIC) is one of the partners of the international research consortium.
